Family Photos

What do you do with your family photos? Frames are great, of course, but there are too many for me to put in frames. Here is what I choose to do in my office. I used the blue painters tape so as not to damage the wall. It is also so easy to add to this display; hopefully soon I will fill up the wall. (do any of you see yourself here? xo)

check out what my friend Martha does with some of hers…it is similar.

I found this idea on Pinterest and I love it…from anji one

and go here and here for some REALLY great ideas; much more imaginative than mine.

Winter is a great time to organize your photos, maybe you will find a good idea here.

A Different Take.3

New feature coming this year…my friend and photographer, Kathleen Falato, will be sharing with us. In her words…

A DIFFERENT TAKE I enjoy photographing everyday objects in my beautiful state of Maine and presenting them in an interesting way. I see beauty in the simple things, and hope you will too.

Forcing Flowers in Winter

What a surprise I had yesterday when I looked at the evergreen arrangement in my front window…a blooming Azalea!

I clipped some greens from my garden in December (I change the water weekly)

Here is an article about what and how to force…

you can even force Bittersweet!

Victorian Homes

What features distinguish a Victorian Home? Here is an article from OldHouses.com with a short list:

Victorian Examples

Identifying Features

  1. Steeply pitched roof of irregular shape, usually with dominant front-facing gable
  2. Textured shingles (and/or other devices) to avoid smooth-walled appearance
  3. Partial or full-width asymmetrical porch, usually one story high and extended along one or both side walls
  4. Asymmetrical facade

and here is one example they give;  the beautiful Mark Twain House in CT.

Here is the Victorian home that I Staged last year; I will show you some great Victorian features:

the asymmetrical porch:

a turret…

front hall closet with stained glass window…

entry hall staircase with gorgeous wood and chandelier…

dinning room featuring an interesting “fireplace” and built-in cabinet with leaded glass doors…

dinning room bump-out…

dinning room built-in sideboard…

dinning room built-in window seat…

and porch…

and throughout the house, old radiators and cool wood floors…

bathrooms with old bathtubs, tile, wall paper and more stained glass…

kitchen with old tile and brick and a nice, old world feel…

This house, as you can see, is so beautifully restored with many of it’s original features…it was just so much fun to be in it for a while!

Sydney’s Doll House.1

Here is the Doll House I gave to my 4 year old grand daughter for Christmas. What fun my husband and I  had re-doing this for her…I hope she has as much fun playing with it.

Before:

I purchased the house at a garage sale for $4.00 several years ago. It was kind of a crummy little house made from a kit, but I loved the roof and it was in fairly good shape. It just needed some TLC!

I decided to do a “Beach House” because she loves the beach and we vacation there together in the summer (and she talks about it all year long). So this is Nonna and Sydney’s beach house. We will have fun adventures here I am sure.

After:

Because she is like any other 4 year old girl, she loves pink, so I painted the outside a pale pink with hot pink shutters; and why not?

Kitchen: I changed the Living Room into the Kitchen because I needed the space for the furniture and I am glad I did; it all fit.

Living Room: Long, skinny, and dark…just like my Living Room. We feel right at home here.

Bathroom:mirror is covered with shells from Florida

Bedroom: bunk beds for Nonna and Sydney, how fun.

I did not photograph the rest of the “family” but there is a brother, Momma and Daddy, and a Poppi..they will be our guests quite often, I am sure.

If you never had a Doll House as a child, why not make one for yourself! It’s a blast.  Or make one for someone you love…I am already planning the next one for when Sydney gets older.

Love you Syd.

(special thanks to Joanne, Chris, Alyssa, Marti and Jess for some materials and advice)

Happy New Year To All

Merry Christmas 2012

“Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born!’

Zugspitze, Germany

“Down in a lowly manger, the humble Christ was born,  and God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn…”

Merry Christmas to all! xo

Zoey at home and at Christmas

I pulled out this old Domino from 2009 with Zoey Deschanel on the cover. She created an adorable music room (wait, I thought she was an actor)? Well, she is both. Here is a glimpse of her at-home studio:

“After years of jotting down lyrics anywhere and everywhere  and cluttering her house with instruments, Deschanel craved a nook for working on songs for her band, She & Him, that could moonlight as a spot for reading.” She took off the closet door and “covered the walls with soundproof padding and upholstered them in a vibrant velvet.” And I love the addition of red and yellow to the blue room-the primary colors. Great ideas!

You can listen to her here, a Christmas duet!

Les Miserables

I’m wondering if your family is as excited about the upcoming movie as we are? The actors were recorded singing LIVE, which they say has never been done before.

here is the video describing it…

I highly recommend the book also, either unabridged, which I have read twice, or abridged or kindle annotated
